Finnish specialty - korvapuusti - tasty bun from Finland

May 30, 2007
We have baked this now several times and it has received warm welcome in Hungary and Romania. It is easy to make and it has special taste due to its spices. Here is the recipe:

1. Mix 50g yeast in half a liter of +37 C milk.

2. Mix into milk also ca. 1.5 teaspoons salt, 1-2 tbl spoons Cardamom and 2 dl sugar and one egg.

3. Keep adding and mixing semi-coarse wheat flour until the dough has right consistency and it is not sticky anymore. That should be around one kilo. Before all flour is added, add also 100g of softened but not hot butter. Mix and squeeze properly.

4. Let the dough rise in a warm, draftless place under cover until it's volume has about doubled.

5. Take the dough, divide in two, and roll both into about 50x50cm rectangles. If you have limited work space it might be better to divide in to three.

6. Spread warmed and liquid butter on both. Then spread sugar, vanillin sugar and cinnamon in desired quantity on top of both rectangles.

7. Roll both rectangles into tight rolls, with the final seam left downwards towards the table. Cut rolls as shown.

8. Turn pieces so that when you press the top down by hand, the cutting surfaces get squeezed to the sides so that it looks like a proper korvapuusti.

9. Cover the buns and let them double in size again in some warm place.

10. Spread egg on top if you want shiny cover, spread sugar (best if a bit bigger crystal size, something like 2-3mm) on top.

11. Fry 10 min in 225 C oven, or until they look nice.

12. Enjoy with cup of coffee!

Django time on OS X 10.4

May 22, 2007
As I like Python language and Django seems to be interesting web application framework, I decided to give a try. Python is pre-installed on Mac OS X 10.4 and I have MySql running so I only downloaded Django and MySql-Python. Installation was nothing special, instructions were good enough. Much easier than setting up WebSphere 5 on Suse 10.1... The only minor problem was that django-admin.py had wrong permissions after installation. I also managed to mess up MySQL setup by myself but that is not because of Django.

I had very quick look through it and I definitely will try out some ideas with. Unfortunately I can not skip sleeping so I leave this topic for later.

Eyes, glasses and working with computer

May 15, 2007
I recently decided to visit an eye doctor. The Semmelweis Egyetem is nearby so we went there one morning and after some waiting I was examined by a young doctor. The reason why I went there was that I was not entirely happy with my current glasses and my eyes had tendency to get tired pretty easily. For my relief there were no serious problems. But I am about to get new glasses with better prescription and I also got some tips for eye care.

There are many factors in environment which affect to eye health. Dusty and polluted city is rather bad for eyes - especially for nordic and blonde people. The doctor said that tear consistency is not as protective as in case of other people but I do not know much more about that. Also, air conditioning in the office can be harmful as it produces both dry air and draft. Suitable eye drops and air moisturizer might provide relief.

The screen of the computer should be big enough and far enough. The worst possible is a small laptop screen as eyes have to focus close and try to read small text. Changing font to bigger one is not a shameful thing to do. Position screen in such a way that there is no bright light coming from behind of it and there are no reflections on the screen.

Eyes are not different from muscles in a sense that they need rest and some exercise. Good sleep and some pauses in coding sessions are necessary. Also, looking far in the distance or plain light colored surface every now and then will help eyes.

Finally but not least is to have proper glasses if they are needed. Because eyes are my most important tool only second to my brain, I find it really important to take decent care of them. Suitable glasses is one part of that.

Pizza Perkele

May 07, 2007
I just made pizza (Dóra helped but I was the one to blame). It wasn't the first time but definitely the most troublesome time. First queuing in the shop for meat for ages. Then making dough with 0,5 liters of water instead of 1,5 deciliters, creating a mess while frying meat, having great problems while rolling the dough and so on.

Final result is good but it required a lot of sisu to make it ready instead of throwing the mess away and go to Pizza Hut.

Modem as a last resort for remote server access

May 03, 2007
While following recent events between Estonia and Russia and related DDoS attacks I was thinking how to reach a server under such situation. The server could be far away physically and due the attack it is not reachable through public Internet. Also there is nobody to sent out to access that server locally - what to do?

Then I remembered modems. I do not mean cable modems but those old analog modems for normal telephone lines. Analog modems were used to connect dial-up services like BBSes and Internet providers. The great thing with those old modems is that they can be utilized to create point-to-point connection without being dependent on Internet. Of course one could use more advanced technology to set up such but analog land lines or suitable mobile phones can be found everywhere and most laptops have analog modem still available.

The speed of V.90/56k modem should be more than enough for terminal access and that is sufficient for administrator to check situation on the server side. It is not really pleasant to send big patches over such connection but changing configurations is possible and most likely that is the way to solve a problem. It would be fun to know how many server administrators have such setup as a plan C ...

Wanted: Fégtherm user's manual

May 01, 2007
I really would like to see how a native hungarian manages to have shower when warm water is provided those hideous Fégtherm boilers. They are sort of automatic as the temperature and flame in the machine changes all the time. This naturally causes that I have to adjust taps continuously - otherwise it will be cold - 5 seconds ok - burning hot - 4 seconds ok - cold. In addition of cold and hot taps there are one slider, one turning knob, and one button (+ piezo) on the machine. So there altogether 4 controls plus that button to adjust... that piece of invention makes me mad every time I have to have shower with it - luckily not too often.
